Theartefactsunearthedfromthesite—someofthemuniquetotheregion—revealavibrantpastwhichsawtheinhabitantsofShaPointeractingwiththeenvironmentindiverseways.EvidenceshowingthemasteryofquartzornamentmanufactureandmetallurgyintheBronzeAgesuggestsincreasingcraftspecialisationandtheriseofamorecomplex,competitivesociety.Lateron,duringtheSixDynasties–Tangperiod,ShaPoturnedintoacentreintheregion’simperiallycontrolledkiln-basedsaltindustry.Closertoourtime,inthenineteenthcenturythefarmingandfishingcommunitiesinShaPobecameimportantsuppliersoffoodandfueltourbanHongKong.Ultimately,thisground-breakingworktellsacompellingstoryabouthumanbeings’ceaselessreinventionoftheirlivesthroughthelensofonespecialarchaeologicalsite.
